Non-slip stair edges: which insert is right for you?

Compare carborundum, rubber and brass non-slip inserts for stair nosings.

Adding grip to a stair edge is one of the simplest ways to make a staircase safer. Our stair nosings can take a non-slip insert in three materials — carborundum, composite rubber and solid brass. Here is how they compare so you can choose the right one.

Why add a non-slip insert?

A smooth timber or vinyl stair can be slippery, especially in socks or when wet. A non-slip insert sits flush in the nosing to give positive grip exactly where feet land, and can also add visual contrast to help people see each step — useful for busy homes, rentals and commercial stairs.

Carborundum

A gritted, textured insert that gives the highest level of grip. Hard-wearing and understated, carborundum is the go-to for heavy use and where safety is the priority.

Composite rubber

A softer, resilient insert that is comfortable underfoot and quietens footfall. A good all-rounder for homes that want grip without a heavily industrial look.

Solid brass

A traditional, decorative choice that adds grip with a touch of period character. Brass develops a natural patina over time and suits heritage and statement staircases.

Which should you choose?

  • Maximum grip and durability: carborundum
  • Comfort and a softer feel: composite rubber
  • Character and a classic look: solid brass

All three are available as inserts on our stair nosings, or on their own as non-slip inlays, cut to length and made to order.
