How to choose stair nosings for LVT, laminate, engineered and solid wood floors.
The right stair nosing depends a lot on the floor it finishes. Here is how to choose nosings for the most common modern floor types — LVT, laminate, engineered and solid wood — so the edge looks seamless and wears well.
The single most important thing is matching the nosing to the thickness of your floor so the tread sits flush. Our profiles come in several thicknesses to suit common floor build-ups — typically 5, 7 and 9mm floors — with the nosing stepping neatly down onto the surface.
Luxury vinyl tile is thin and flexible, so it needs a nosing that caps and protects the vulnerable leading edge. A bullnose or square-edge nosing in a matching colour gives LVT stairs a solid, finished edge that stands up to foot traffic. A non-slip insert is a popular addition, as LVT can be smooth underfoot.
Laminate chips easily at exposed edges, which is exactly where a nosing earns its keep. A hard-wearing, colour-matched nosing protects the edge and hides the cut line of the board for a clean look.
With engineered or solid wood you usually want the nosing to disappear into the floor. That is where made-to-order colour matching comes in — we finish the nosing to sit seamlessly with your boards, so the eye reads one continuous timber surface.

Screens never show colour perfectly, so if an exact match matters we recommend a bespoke colour match — send us your floor and we will match the finish before anything is made.
